Understanding Shoulder Pain

The shoulder has a wide range of movement and is subjected to considerable force at times which can make it prone to injury. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint supported by ligaments and the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that support the shoulder and guide the bones of the shoulder, by directing the force produced by the larger muscles. In order to work properly the shoulder must have balanced function of the muscles and ligaments around the joint.

Our therapists specialize in treating shoulder injuries and problems and can evaluate the motion and strength of the shoulder and will provide specific tests to determine the source of your problem.

Common shoulder problems

• Rotator cuff impingement
• Rotator cuff tears
• Shoulder dislocation
• Sublaxtion and hypermobility (excessive motion)
• Arthritis
• Tendinitis and bursitis
• Adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder
• Cartilage injuries (glenoid labrum tears)

Signs of shoulder dysfunction

• Pain with reaching overhead
• Pain with reaching to back of opposite shoulder
• Inability to put hand into the middle of back without pain
• Clicking and pain in the shoulder
